I meant to post this small prayer on Saturday while we all waited for Easter, but here we are three days later and I’m just now getting around to it, which feels about right for a post like this. I was inspired by Mark 15:43 to write this prayer, the prayer of Joseph of Arimathea, or perhaps your prayer too.
Oh God whose ways are above mine,
I thought he was the one.
You promised us victory over our enemies and a kingdom that would never end, you promised us a Savior.
And I swear, I thought we had found it.
We have been waiting for hundreds of years when finally, finally the silence was broken. There were miracles, Lord. I heard of lame men walking and demons being cast out. I saw the crowds, heard the words, broke bread with him.
We thought we were so lucky to be the ones to know the Savior. I thought the promised freedom had come.
But I saw him die, Lord.
What do you do when everything you have hoped in has died?
I suppose you bury the body and wait for the kingdom.
It’s what we’ve been doing all along, isn’t it?
We bury our dead hopes and wait for the kingdom.
Perhaps it will rise tomorrow.
Your kingdom come, your will be done.
Do we still pray as he taught us?
